Cara's history unfolds carefully. Kahlan's hatred of her companion deepens when she learns Cara was the Mord'Sith who killed her sister. But when she learns how Cara became who she is (in a story that reveals some surprises to Cara herself, shaking her to her core), the seeds of compassion are sewn in Kahlan.

He also has this to say:

Legend of the Seeker is based, however loosely, on Terry Goodkind's fantasy novel series, The Sword of Truth. And while I understand there are copious, serious departures from Goodkind's map, I still enjoyed the televised journey.

Amen to that! So nice to see someone who can appreciate the show on it's own merits.

Examiner article - a SOS interview

Our very own Karen Mendez of the SOS team gave an interview to the Examiner!

When news broke that Legend of the Seeker was canceled after just two seasons, fans like Karen Mendez came together for the purpose of one mission: to Save Our Seeker, dedicated to not only keep hope of the series alive for another season, but also continue Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, and Cara's good fight against tyranny, oppression, and other dark forces in the Midlands.


Were you a fan of The Sword of Truth series before watching Legend of the Seeker?

Karen Mendez: I actually became a fan of The Sword of Truth book series because of Legend of the Seeker. It has now become my favorite book series. It's a win-win for me since with the show we can see the story play out to an extent and within the realm and capability of television. The books gives us that wonderful back story and full extent of who the characters are and a deeper sense of their endeavor. We are also introduced to the wonderful world of Terry Goodkind, which is fantastic. I love both the show and the books and view them as its own wonderful intertwined entity.

What were your likes and dislikes of the second season and why?

KM: I feel the second season was absolutely great. It just kept getting better and better all around: story-wise, acting [Bridget Regan, Craig Horner, Tabrett Bethell and Bruce Spence outdid themselves], not to mention the gorgeous New Zealand backdrop and exquisite score making for splendid tv watching. I also liked that while still different from The Stone of Tears, the second season seems to be more in tune with The Sword of Truth books in general. It's darker since the Keeper of the Underworld is the 'chief baddie' and also the character of Richard looks and behaves more like the Richard leader of the first book Wizard's First Rule. The second season also introduced the Mord-Sith Cara, who's beautifully played by the talented Tabrett Bethell. I loved all the nods to the books in the second season, primarily to The Stone of Tears. The episode titled "Bound" is yet another nod to the books [Faith of the Fallen]. As for my dislike, I would have to say it's having season two be the end of the story [for now]. Though season two was an excellent season finale, there is still much story to be told and the fans are hopeful, awaiting and striving for more Seeker.

What do you believe were the main factors behind the surprise cancellation of Seeker -- despite having such a fervent fan base?

KM: The fact is the syndication model was really the main culprit. With Tribune going bankrupt, ABC Studios ended up without one of the key distributors. And a fantasy show isn't exactly cheap to produce. I'm convinced that if this show aired on a main channel (i.e. NBC, CBS, CW), we would have been spared all this pain, and the show would have been a wild success. Poor marketing, as well as not having it on a set schedule, was another factor. It jumped around depending on region. I, myself being an avid tv watcher, had not heard of the show until a friend of mine told me about it. I began watching it when it was in its fifth episode. I did begin with the pilot and the rest just to catch up, but wow, from the pilot episode I was hooked...actually from the first scene! All this is a shame because it does have such a fervent and diverse fan base which, despite Legend of the Seeker not being back this season, has remained just as passionate if not more.

"Legend of the Seeker is Fun
The show is fun to watch. It’s an adventure tale that will leave you feeling uplifted at the end of each episode. With that it’s not a fluff show though there are dramatic moments and intense moments but Legend of the Seeker is well balanced so the show does not feel weighty.

Sword Play and Choreography
I really enjoyed watching the myriad of fight sequences in Legend of the Seeker. There are many different types of weapons used. They show different techniques and fighting styles.

The fight sequences do not get repetitive and boring. They mix up the camera shots from framing to who is followed from fight to fight. There is even a nice mix of how the fights unfolds.

What is most impressive of all is watching Richard Cypher’s development. He starts out fighting with a woodsman’s skill level but with a lot of power behind it. His style is sloppy but that power is still demonstrated. As the show progresses and Richard’s training improves so does his fighting prowess. His style shifts around until he gets his own style and he demonstrates more finesse with his characters progression.

Performance
The acting in the show is stellar. All of the performers make for believable characters, emotions and situations.

Exploration of Truth
Truth is one of the themes played with throughout the show. I love how the show gets into the meat of what truth is and it’s distinctions are through the use of the Seekers, Confessors and Wizards First Rule.

The Wizard’s Rule
In legend of the Seeker there are Wizards Rules. They are a wonderful device that brings about much humor at first because the number of the rule and what it is keeps changing. They are also a powerful device for exploring certain psychological principles.

The Mord’Sith
This leather wearing group brings such wonderful elements to the show. Their particular ability to negate and even turn magic back on the user is a brilliant way to balance the use of magic in a fantasy setting. They also get the viewer to explore their position on topics of what is pain, pleasure, eroticism and sensuality.

The Confessors
This group of magic users also brings a fresh perspective to the normal fantasy story. The Confessors are a fun balance between amazing power that comes with a sad cost and a tremendous weakness. They also become a fun device for exploring subjects like unrequited love, vengeance/forgiveness, and what is truth.

Richard Cypher and Kahlan Amnell
In the midst of all the wonderful sword play, magic and action there is also a great unrequited love story between Richard and Kahlan. Both being hot is a nice plus to the show but they also do a brilliant job setting up their love story and getting the audience to care greatly about their situation and success.

Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander
Lovingly known as Zedd. Any good fantasy story needs the wise old man or old man wizard, in Zedd we get both. His character is brilliantly played reminding me of those adventures I took with my grandfather. He brings humor, fun and and wisdom to the show.

Denna & Cara Mason
These Mord’Sith bring a fun mix to the show. Hot, leather wearing, ass kicking, strong women are just scratching the surface of what they bring. They also bring a great struggle that the audience can empathize with. The struggle between bettering ones self and ones situation and having to fight against what society has made one into."

A bit of inspiration

A few people recently have been questioning our campaign and it's goal - to save Legend of the Seeker. They say that it's a no go, it can't be done, it's too late, yadda yadda yadda.
Now most of us know that's rubbish, but what about those who are new to the campaign? Or those who only see the negative posts?
Well, Seeker baby Deacon at the LotS forum has dug out this article which names other shows that have been cancelled and yet still been brought back.

"•Most recently, both The Game (CW) and Ghost Whisperer (CBS) were axed by their networks, only to be picked up by BET and ABC, respectively.

•Mystery Science Theater 3000 made it seven seasons on Comedy Central until it was canned. Fans shopped it around to other networks (and, like our intrepid LoTS fans, purchased a full-page ad in Variety), finally persuading Sci-Fi to pick it up.

•Sci-Fi also saved Stargate SG-1 after it was canceled by Showtime. It made it five more seasons on Sci-Fi.

•Fox shut down Family Guy after its third season until DVD sales skyrocketed; the show is about to air its 9th season.

•Like LoTS, the original season of Star Trek only made it two seasons. A letter-writing campaign got it brought back for a third.

•America's Most Wanted was canceled for only six weeks after Fox received 200,000 letters from unhappy fans.

•CBS fired Cagney and Lacy after only two seasons. The fans responded in force, and the show was brought back for four more seasons, as well as four Made-for-TV movies.

•And speaking of CBS, they famously picked up JAG after NBC dumped it after one season. It ran for nine more seasons, and sparked another series of series - NCIS."

My favourite from this list is Star Trek. Think of what that one original show spawned - The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise. Not to mention all the merchandise it sold, and still sells. And the stars are still big names at conventions world wide.
Imagine if those fans had given up. We wouldn't have any of that. It just goes to show that fan campaigns can and have been successful.
But they won't if we give up. Nothing will be acccomplished if we stop fighting.

So if you want Seeker back keep fighting, no stone left unturned. No effort is too small. We are a great and growing fandom, and if we continue our efforts and keep finding new ways to show the tv networks how wrong they were, then we can succeed. And we will.

New article about SOS - Fantasy Book review

And it's from a UK site for a change which is nice. Lee over at Fantasy Book Review.co.uk has this to say about out campaign:

Fans of Legend of the Seeker have launched a multi-pronged effort to build visibility and audience for their show, despite the fact that Legend of the Seeker has been cancelled. Their aim is to help producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert find a new distribution channel for a third season.

Recent activities including raising $3000 for an advertisement in The Hollywood Reporter and a live podcast for Labor Day Weekend’s Dragon*Con in Atlanta.

To help promote the fan community’s activities and assist in building audience for the show, Project LOTS More is organizing free publicity and blogosphere coverage of the ongoing fan activities. SaveOurSeeker.com, one of the leading fan websites, has been coordinating the print ad campaign, raising money for advertisements as well as a bus stop near ABC Studios’ Burbank office. The website has also made poster tear sheets, other printed materials, and iTunes gift cards available to fans organizing Seeker Visibility Events at major conventions like Comic Con 2010 and Dragon*Con."

A write up for Cara

With his blog 'TV in space' Glenn Farland is proving himself not just a devoted fan of sci-fi and fantasy but an avid Seeker baby as well.

His first article, entitled 'Fans continue to seek more Seeker' was a great write up for the SOS campaign, taking note of the fact that the Torch Online is noticing us and calling LotS a 'cult phenomenon'. We of course couldn't agree more. And it's great having as much exposure as possible.

His latest Seeker article features everyone's favourite Mord'Sith, the incredibly sexy Cara Mason. In it Glenn addresses the gay characters that were omitted from a recent Blastr article on the '20 gay characters we love from sci-fi movies and TV'
Thay had neglected to mention our Cara. Sacrilegious I say ;)
So Glenn has given her a mention instead.

Simply entitled 'A follow up to Blastr's top gay sci-fi characters', he calls Cara "most loveable and yet toughest gay characters I’ve ever seen". We couldn't agree more with that either.

Thanks for the article Glenn, Seeker fans appreciate every word.

A little bit of good news

Ok, it's not great news but it does give a little glimmer of hope to flagging spirits.

The snarky and unwelcome article at tv by numbers titled 'Syfy Not Saving ‘Legend of the Seeker;’ Looking Doubtful Anyone Else Will Either' has had fans feeling downhearted since it was published.

Well, angryfantasyfan dug out another article by the same author from a few months ago with this title 'When Pigs Fly: Will DirectTV Save “Damages?” '

He seemed pretty darn sure that no way in hell was DirecTV going to pick up Damages. And yet, just a few months later, he had to eat his words. Why? Because DirecTV announced that it was indeed picking up the show!

So to all fans out there feeling dispirited because of his article, fear not! It means nothing. Keep those letters flowing and we will see who wins in the end.
